We are a creative independent publisher striving to offer our readers something a little bit different. We love to read books that are imaginative, sometimes offbeat, always original, and we’re committed to working with the writers and designers who inspire us and thus, hopefully, our readers. We work in three main areas:

  • Non-fiction. Producing engaging, well-written non-fiction and attractive illustrated books. With a broad range of memoir, history, arts and environment titles, we celebrate extraordinary human achievement, explore important cultural traditions and champion planet Earth and its diverse species.
  • Fiction. Giving a platform to the most exciting and talented new authors, especially those from Scotland and women writers. As well as some wonderful literary and historical fiction, we have now created a new imprint, Contraband, which features an eclectic range of crime, mystery and thriller writing – ranging from pacy detective stories to intriguing enigmas.
  • Digital publishing. We’re becoming renowned as something of an innovator in digital publishing and have worked on a range of successful mobile phone apps, including Bookspotting, Burns Night and Pandacademy.

If you are a reader looking to purchase one of our books, they will be available from your local independent bookshop, so please support them by ordering books there. You will see more details on some of the individual book pages on this site.

Submissions

We occasionally accept unsolicited manuscripts, but due to the large number of submissions there is often a delay in being able to consider new projects. If you would like to submit your book or proposal, please send a synopsis, your proposed contents list (if non-fiction), a sample chapter, or two if your chapters are short, and a brief CV/resumé. Please note that we receive many unsolicited fiction submissions and we are unable to assess more than a small proportion of these, so we recommend that you submit fiction to a literary agent. Email to hermes@saraband.net is preferred, but if you submit by post, please enclose a stamped addressed envelope if you would like your submission to be returned after consideration.
